Superior craftsmanship and a mastery of international trends dominated the 20th edition of the leading décor, design and lifestyle exhibition, Decorex Cape Town, which took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 27 April to 1 May. This exciting #rhythmoflife show boasted an incredible programme of on-trend features amidst some of the region’s best style innovators, all of which was well-received by the 36 619 visitors that attended the milestone show.
“Two decades of Decorex Cape Town culminated in an abundance of elegant style, innovative features and on-trend designs that captured the essence of this beautiful city,” said Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Decorex SA. “It was a really memorable milestone celebration that allowed us to reminisce about the creative forces that have brought us to this point as well as bringing to life the current décor and design trends reflective of this region.”
Headline sponsors for the past 20 years, Plascon has truly positioned itself as colour experts for the exhibition and this was evident in the incredibly dynamic Plascon feature. Here visitors were enticed with the interactive ‘colour café’ where experts shared their insights into the importance of colour complements and contrasts on spatial perception and cognitive influence.
“For Decorex Cape Town we chose to exhibit in earthy tones – Hudson, You’re My Sweetie, Pasta Primavera, Orange You Glad, Rooibos and Chustnut Filly – which we felt represented the style and feel of this beautiful city,” explained Kerstin Eser, Plascon’s Media Stylist and Colour Specialist, who added that Plascon has chosen a different colour palette for each of the three Decorex 2018 exhibitions. “For Decorex Cape Town, we wanted to showcase how the various uses of colour impact the customer experience quite dramatically while bringing to life a sense of Cape Town’s distinctive sense of taste and style. These insights into the importance of colour and making the most appropriate product choice for both the individual as well as the space, alongside the interactive nature of the Plascon stand, were elements we felt resonated deeply with the many visitors who we interacted in the Plascon space.”
The importance of colour on the psyche was particularly evident in the new Rooms to Grow feature where four of the area’s top suppliers and designers took on the design of a baby’s room, toddler’s room, tween’s room and teen’s room. These stylish installations, which took visitors on a journey of maturation, were curated by Rad Kidz Baby & Kids Furniture; Clever Little Monkey; Duett Kids’ Furniture for and The Room Growing Furniture.
Focusing on more mature tastes was The Bedroom Project where Vox Furniture, Changing Spaces and Lucky Fitsch were given blank slates to transform into a trendy apartment bedroom, a serene beach house space and an elegant hotel room respectively – all underscored by the #rhythmoflife designs. This style was complemented in the ISCA Bathroom Trends Project where ISCA showcased their latest bathroom fittings and finishings in two spaces. These were curated by winners of the SABC3 Win-a-Home competition, Abiah Mahlase and Bradley Muttitt in the ‘Indulged’ trend; with Lovilee blogger, Kari Kelly completing the second ‘Grounded’ bathroom design.
The #rhythmoflife theme continued into the popular Decorex Designer Spotlight feature, this year brought to life by the inimitable design team from Mariano Rossouw, who chose to craft a timeless room setting reflecting design trends in a unique way. Inspired style and #rhythmoflife tones were then captured in a home space where the Decorex team, led by Creative Director, Anita Bloom, curated the @home Trend Home presented by Decorex. The home was crafted with choice pieces from @home homeware store and @homelivingspace showcasing this year’s design trends. The character of this design team, as well as the Decorex members behind the scenes, were cleverly represented in 18 unique décor items artfully displayed in the #withlovefromDecorex feature. The media were also treated to a true #rhythmoflife experience in the Bloggers’ Lounge which provided them with a beautifully curated space for productive engagement.
Elements of design
Decorating a room involves the careful selection of various décor items which means that several aspects need to be considered. The introduction of the Design and Textile Elements; Lighting Elements brought to you by Fundi Light & Living feature and Natural Elements – brought to you by Neolith features highlighted so clearly the impact the various material choices have on a space. Decorex Cape Town welcomed the insightful creations by Moorgas & Waldron Interiors, Andrea Brand, Hertex, Biggie Best, Fundi Light & Living and Neolith. This trend of natural elements in décor extended into the 100% Design South Africa, collocated with Decorex Cape Town, featuring the new 100% Clay feature. Here visitors were invited to view a stunning crockery collection moulded by the country’s leading ceramicists.
Extending the latest design into the home’s exterior was the highly popular She Shed feature, which also raised funds and awareness for the breast cancer NGO, PinkDrive. Cape Contours Landscape Solutions and COCO-MAT proved their talent by transforming two basic outdoor sheds into feminine sanctuaries with a touch of pink. Renowned South African actress, Vanessa Haywood, lent invaluable support to the initiative, providing personal input and engaging with the Decorex audience on both the work performed by PinkDrive, as well as this innovative installation.
The outdoor influence continued into this new feature, EGO Garden of the Future, brought to you by Smith Power Equipment, which exposed visitors to the latest range of EGO Power gardening and landscape equipment, all of which is environmentally-friendly, user-friendly, and completely silent in use. Inspiration on all things landscape and design moved rhythmically into the Builders DIY Theatre where visitors were entertained by insightful demonstrations provided by Tanya Visser, Elle Franco and Ryan Paulsen. Everything from sowing seeds to crafting wine racks was covered in this informative feature.
In the Kitchen
Visitors got to walk through an on-trend kitchen design, highlighting the room’s multi-purpose use as open-plan living continues. Further kitchen design ideas emanated from The Franke Kitchen Trends Project where Gardner Interior Concepts, Holly Wood Furniture, Unique Kitchens and The Kitchen Studio integrated the latest Franke SA range into crafted kitchen spaces focusing on ‘An Expression of Colour’.
Renowned food entertainer, Claire Allen; Bouwer Flowers & Happinest Décor Hire; Westin Superfoods; and professional mixologists from Thirst all put on an incredible demonstration in the stylishly curated kitchen setting, The Gourmet Cooking Theatre.
Style and Taste
Once appetites had been sufficiently awakened in these kitchen spaces, visitors welcomed the tasteful offerings, incredible drink options and well-chosen décor of Rhythm Restaurant + Bar, The Tasting Room Wine Bar and, The Jasminum Eatery – furnished by Urban Tonic. Italian roasted coffees and tasty snacks were a welcome treat in a lovely red, white and black space of The Coffee Cup by Illy Caffé.
