With such a large presence in the city’s décor and design industry, Mobelli Furniture + Living is well-positioned to identify emerging trends. Sachs has shared some of the more popular furniture trends across Joburg.
– Mixed materials
Tactility and natural materials are growing in popularity and we are seeing those fused to create special pieces for the home. This is evident in marble and wooden coffee tables, as well as credenzas with embellished finishes being introduced with striking geometric elements and patterns.
This style is eclectic rather than cluttered and chaotic. Maximalism is about breaking the rules of style and it is a much-needed switch up from the long-serving minimalism norms. More is more! You can express your personality through your interior without following every single rule in the book.
– Earthy colour tones
Earth tones draw from the colour palette of browns, tans, warm greys, and greens. The colours are muted, emulating natural colours found in soil, moss, trees and rocks. This trend speaks to a slower way of life, a more conscious living that reflects in green and earth interiors.
– Vibrant colours and jewel tones
In direct contrast from earth tones, vibrant colours and jewels tones are a longstanding trend that show no sign of abating. Emerald greens, sapphire and citrines are the amalgamation of vibrant colours coming into the home. At Mobelli, we prefer to introduce pops of these colours through occasional chairs, rugs and soft furnishings.
– Self-expression through interiors
Trends are moving away from stark, personality-void interiors to authentic spaces anchored in self-expression. Homes are becoming a place for healing – our own personal sanctuary. With the collective consciousness becoming increasingly aware of the impact of consumerism on our planet and its inhabitants, we will continue to see a movement towards meaningful pieces. People are becoming more thoughtful about acquiring long-lasting pieces to create interiors that are intrinsically unique.
Tips for selecting furniture
Sachs explained that the right room layout is crucial to enjoy any space optimally: “It should be done with precision to allow easy flow in and out of the area. And equally important — know how you want to use the space.” Here are his top 4 tips for choosing furniture pieces in any space:
1. Mighty measure
Determine the size of the area by establishing the exact dimensions and remember to measure the dimensions of the entrance too. After all, the size of the entrance will determine the size of the furniture.
2. Invest in quality where necessary
While remaining on trend with your interiors is important, remember that trends come and go. At Mobelli, we advocate going for contemporary, classic, large-ticket items in earthy tones which don’t date. To incorporate the latest interior trends into your home occasional chairs and smaller items will bring personality into the room. These can be relatively inexpensive to replace as trends change.
3. Visual interest is vital
Consider incorporating a range of furniture pieces with different characteristics. If you’re opting for a serene and calm area for rest and recovery, keep the furniture pieces similar to avoid ‘visual noise’. If you’re after lively and energetic, throw in a curated piece of artwork, match it up with an extra-large sofa and statement piece and achieve that on-trend, cohesive look easily.
4. Balance with scale
The size of various furniture pieces in relation to each other, and the size of the space, speaks to the scale of the room. Consider different pieces to create height and depth in the space – aim to create unity and don’t forget to leave white space around the furniture.

However, local design is coming into its own and South African designers are re-interpreting these global design trends for the African continent.”
