This year’s five-day Decorex Cape Town exhibition drew 37 768 visitors through the doors of the Cape Town International Convention Centre – this amounts to an impressive 11% increase in trade visitors seeking quality décor products and services. Themed ‘Designing for Africa – feels like home’, visitors were emerged in all the colours, styles and dominant trends emanating from the African continent through a number of innovative features.
“Cape Town’s untamed creative spirit was really evident at this year’s show,” said Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Reed Exhibitions. “Visitors were able to experience Africa’s vision of current design trends and the impact this continent is having on the trajectory of interior design through a number of key features. It was an impressive overview of the superior creative talent emerging from Cape Town.”
Cullingworth said they were excited to have South African-based paint manufacturer, Olympic Paints®, welcomed on board as the exclusive paint partner for Decorex SA this year. Working closely with the Decorex team, Olympic Paints® created an exclusive colour palette for the shows – the Premium Platinum Plus Lux Range – which featured across the exhibitor stands.
Dominance in design
An evident passion for African-styled interiors saw the Decorex Designer Spotlight by Danela Conti perfectly syncing with this year’s theme. Then onto The Apartment Project by SHF where refined SHF furniture created modern local apartment installations. And, in celebration of its 40th anniversary, the dynamic team from Sevens curated the ultimate Decorex Urban Living Trend House with Sevens.
Taking a look at the heart of the home was The Trend Kitchen with Space Interiors where curved cabinetry, sleek styles and storage-enhancing techniques were a focus, while the Kitchen Design Project by the Studio Collection gave four industry experts the ideal chance to show off. CCMI, Inside Out, Interior Fusion and HH Joinery and Carpentry interpreted the show theme through stunning kitchen installations with CCMI awarded the top design for the Kitchen Design Project 2019.
Room for style
Aura Furniture & Décor, Lalegno, The Room, and Headboards for Africa incorporated their latest handcrafted products into room settings for the Bedroom Project. For the younger generations, Simply Child and Kids Emporium crafted the Children’s Playroom and Décor Project, a nurturing space with innovative and adaptable furniture solutions. Quality and comfort were at the heart of this year’s Bathroom Project as WOMAG introduced walk-in showers, mosaic tiles and large mirrors for ultimate urban sophistication.
Enlightening trends at The Lighting Project by Fundi Light & Living exposed visitors to the transformative impact of lighting – ambient, functional and accent – on any room setting.
Platforms of inspiration
Industry experts engaged in a CPD-accredited, free-flow forum – InStudio Trend Theatre by ABSA – to share ways of commercialising and expanding business opportunities. The theatre welcomed International Property Investor, Andrew Walker; Robyn Curko of Lusso Luxury Living; South African trend forecaster and creative business consultant, Dave Nemeth; design and creative industry professionals from Inscape Education Group, Thulare Matlaba, Miguel de Figueiredo and Leigh Wright and interior design visionary, Paige.
Fashion then took centre stage as Inscape Education Group presents 2nd Skin, a dynamic revisioning of construction materials into fashion. The creative passion continued into 100% Extraordinary taking place within the 100% Design South Africa pavilion. Here visitors could experience ultra-unusual design creations in furniture, textile, ceramics and even floral. This design inspiration carried over into the Fabric Trend Bar where high-end fabric suppliers – Skinny Laminx, Shine Shine, Lula Fabrics and Fabricnation – featured the best in interior design fabrics.
Cape Town designers put it all on the line at this year’s exclusive Designer Pavilion as renowned South African creatives, Imagenius Interiors, Gordijn Studio and 8 Degrees South, LIM, Etheral Bound Journal and CASA Leon by Leon at CCXIX showcased their signature products. Talent continued to overwhelm at the Design Project where unique stylings and accessories from ECO Furniture, Simply Child and Hinterveld were on display.
Releasing the inner creative
The spirited Decorex team gave a glimpse of their individual tastes as they selected their favourite furniture pieces in the #withlovefromDecorex with Elevenpast narrative feature.
The latest in exterior design solutions took root in The Landscapers where Cape Town’s green-fingered artists detailed ways to enhance the outdoor space. Visitors could then source the right products to craft their idyllic garden setting in the Garden of the Future Landscaping Feature where landscape specialists – Palmers Exclusive Metals, Perfect Grass, Hope Furniture and Classic Stone – put on an organic display.
Books and blogs
Literary inspiration filled the pages of The Library by EFAM which enticed visitors with magazines, autobiographies and designer coffee table books focused on décor, music, fashion, design, cooking, lifestyle and television.
A tasty addition
It was a veritable feast of fun as the South African comedic cooking duo, the Jacobs Coffee Magicians, kept the audience spellbound in this year’s Jacobs Gourmet Cooking Theatre built by LUSSO Luxury Living. MasterChef judge and the Ultimate Braai Master, Pete Goffe-Wood, bantered with Celebrity MasterChef winner and comedians, Chris Forrest, in this hilariously entertaining cooking demonstration. And things continued to percolate at the Illy Experience where the talented baristas kept visitors rejuvenated with their warm and cold beverage offerings.
Design and taste worked in unison at the Dine + Design Restaurant + Bar by Urban Tonic and The Harvest Table featuring 8° South. Hungry patrons were treated to gourmet menu items using only the freshest locally-sourced ingredients…all in beautifully-curated restaurant settings.
Western Cape’s finest home-grown vintages elevated the spirits at the Wine & Bubbly Bar furnished by Homewood while the smooth-style craft gins and mellow-tasting rums created enticing cocktail mixes at The Rummery + Gin Garden.
Judges at this year’s Decorex Cape Town Exhibitor Stands Awards were overwhelmed by the superior quality and sophisticated designs featuring at the show. The much-coveted ‘Best Overall Stand’ was awarded to Caesarstone for 2019.
