KSA provides tips on how to align taste and budget in kitchen design
Featuring at Decorex Joburg 2019, the Kitchen Specialists Association of South Africa (KSA) is a non-profit organisation that ensures an elevated standard of service and products within the kitchen industry.
When it comes to kitchen renovations, one of the primary causes of conflict between a customer and kitchen company is when the client’s taste and budget do not align.
“Knowing what you can afford, being able to afford it, or being prepared to pay for what you want, is vitally important for a conflict-free kitchen renovation,” explained Stephanie Forbes, National Manager of the Kitchen Specialists Association of South Africa (KSA). “We’ve outlined some tips for kitchen renovations within budget so that the client is happy with the finished product.”
- Have realistic expectations
The KSA encourages all homeowners to research finishes and the actual cost before embarking on a kitchen renovation. Most people will select a desired kitchen design from magazines or Pinterest which feature the latest materials and design styles – most of which are going to cost more. While your heart might tell you that you want duco, veneer and ultra matt Nano technology laminate, your budget might not be able to stretch to it.
“The job of the designer is to find alternative, cost-effective ways to give you a similar look,” explained Forbes. “It is important that you realise you are not getting the materials in the picture, and these new options may not react the same way to cleaning, marking and durability. Be open-minded and willing to embrace the alternate finishes offered. If you can’t compromise, then rather hold off, save a bit more, and do the kitchen with the materials you really wanted when you have the funds.”
- High-end materials need a specialist’s touch
One of the modern trends in kitchen design is handle-less drawers and cupboard inserts for storage. This is a sleek, clean look and many people are embracing them for kitchen revamps. If you are looking at storage-enhancing inserts and soft-close runners, you will be putting some pressure on your budget – not only because of the manufacturing and hardware costs, but you will need specialists to install them.
“The market has a range of companies with different expertise,” explained Forbes. “It is important to remember that high-end products and materials require high-end specialists for the job to be successful. Specialised manufacturing and highly-trained staff are needed to work with certain design styles and materials. And, because these companies are specialists in their area, they charge accordingly.”
She said problems arise when consumers approach more cost-effective companies to work on high-end materials and hardware.
“If a company does not work with specific materials and hardware regularly, their factory and staff will be unfamiliar with the specifics and technicalities of the product,” continued Forbes. “This means that when the kitchen is installed, the required attention to detail is not in place for the materials to look their best or work properly. If you want a high-end kitchen, then save up and go to a company that specialises in this design.”
- Visit the showroom
Forbes said consumers are often disappointed by the finished product when they are actually getting what they paid for.
“Consumers need to make sure their expectations are aligned with what their selected company can deliver,” said Forbes. “Their showroom should be a good indicator of this. The consumer should expect the installed product to reflect the quality that is installed in the company’s showroom. If you do not see a particular style you like, but the sales’ consultant has assured you they are able to produce this – ask for client referrals and visit these sites to put your mind at ease.”
Every kitchen company specialises in a particular price bracket because of the materials they work with most regularly, as well as the hardware and products. There is a company suited to all tastes and budgets, it’s just important to find a realistic fit for you.
Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Reed Exhibitions, said visitors to this year’s Decorex exhibition would benefit greatly from face-to-face interaction with specialists from KSA: “As well as getting the chance to see some on-trend kitchen displays in the stunning Kitchen Design Project by the Studio Collection feature, visitors will be able to get worthwhile insights and advice directly from the country’s leading kitchen suppliers, craftsmen and designers.”
Experts from KSA will be available at all Decorex exhibitions, offering useful tips and tricks for renovations and builds from the KSA Kitchen Advice Centre. For more information about the KSA visit www.ksa.co.za
