The Franke Kitchen Design project at Decorex Cape Town 2017 was not an easy decision for the judges, Clinton Soutter of Franke SA and Stephanie Forbes of KSA. All four participating companies; Unique Kitchens, Ayesha Cupboards, Gardner Interiors and Holly Wood; pushed the boundaries producing impressive stands to fulfil the brief of ‘Simplicity in design’.
We asked the judges to give us some insight as to how they narrowed down their selection to Unique Kitchens for the Franke Kitchen Trends Project Decorex Cape Town 2017 award which included a R10,000 prize.
When Franke decided on the theme ‘Simplicity in design’ for their 2017 kitchen design project they wanted to see companies embrace their signature style but break it down into design, use of materials, use of colour.
“We were looking for someone who designs smart, finding solutions to optimize space and storage while using colours and materials that go simply and harmoniously together”, says Clinton Soutter of Franke.
The quality of the four entries into the project was incredibly high. All four participants had given good thought to the brief. Gardner Interiors did a superb job on showcasing cleaver simplistic design elements, Ayesha had put their focus on the use of simple and affordable materials while Holly Wood had brought their normally freestanding kitchens to a new look sleek more built-in look.
However, it was Unique Kitchens that walked away with the prize. With only two points separating the top three the decision was not reached easily but in the end it was Unique Kitchen’s attention to the smallest detail that gave them the edge.
“Unique Kitchen’s thought of everything. The first impression was superb with a warm inviting vibe, skilful accessorising and good clear branding – so you knew exactly who they were. But it was when we entered the stand that we could see the true skill. Every possible area had been used simply and effectively to create easy to use and effective storage”, says Stephanie Forbes of the Kitchen Specialists Association.
What the judges liked best was that the company had stayed true to their contemporary country inspiration while simply ensuring harmony and ergonomic design.
“We are very proud of all the contestants and are looking forward to seeing if the Johannesburg contestants can keep up with the high standards set in Durban and Cape Town”, says Soutter.
