The very latest design trends and talents are set to be showcased at the 2015 edition of 100% Design South Africa. The exhibition takes place in Johannesburg in August this year, with an exciting preview planned for Decorex Cape Town in April.
100% Design South Africa is a platform for the top local and international design names to present their latest work to a trade and consumer audience. The exhibition takes place alongside Decorex Joburg – the largest décor, design and lifestyle exhibition in Africa – at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand from 6th to 10th August 2015.
Object that Moves Award
Kicking off the countdown will be the 100% Design SA Object that Moves Award at the Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards taking place on 25 February, at the GUILD International Design Fair in Cape Town.
The 100% Design SA Object that Moves Award will be presented in recognition of an advanced and original product evaluated on aesthetic appearance, quality, functionality, innovation sustainability and commercial success to date. The winner of this award will receive a stand at 100% Design South Africa in Joburg in August.
100% Black at Decorex Cape Town
100% Black is an exhibition at Decorex Cape Town in April to preview this year’s exhibition in Johannesburg later this year.
In selecting contemporary design pieces void of colour, Programmes Director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery, focuses on how good form, shape, line and structure play an integral part in the design thinking and creative process.
“I am interested in how much of today’s design is dictated by its sculptural quality. In some instances it could be simple, minimalist lines that are honest for their lack of detail. In others, it is the quiet, almost stealth-like shape of the piece. Likewise it could be the twisting complexity born of new technologies or the sensual flow of a curvaceous form created by the touch of the hand to the material. By showcasing items all in black I hope to celebrate with the visitor the beauty and deep thinking of such design consideration.”
100% Black can be seen at Decorex Cape Town at the CTICC from 24 to 27 April 2015.
Fast-forward to August 2015 and some of the unique features that will form part of the 100% Design South Africa experience. Targeted at both members of the décor, design and architecture trade as well as consumers – this year’s exhibition promises an inspiring line up of trend and talent:
100% Colour in association with Plascon
100% Colour will showcase the power of colour when it is the main component of a designed object. From surface design to furniture and product design, visitors will see the impact and energy colour can give to any piece.
Featured Designer: Renée Rossouw
Nurturing future stars and growing the design industry lies at the heart of the ethos behind 100% Design South Africa. Each year the curators, Laurence Brick and Cathy O’Clery, choose a designer whom they see as a future design leader.
This year the baton is handed to a young designer who is already making quite an impact on the design scene with her bold colourful graphic patterns applied to furniture and wallpaper designs. Renée Rossouw, a recently graduated architect, will be showcasing a brand new portfolio of designs and products.
The Light Tank
Lighting is enjoying unprecedented attention in the world of design. The Light Tank will be an immersive and interactive journey for visitors through a darkened space to explore the poetry and visual effects of light and lighting design.
100 Beautiful Things 2015
100 Beautiful Things 2014 was launched in Cape Town in 2014 to celebrate the diversity of South African Design in the year of World Design Capital. Now 100 Beautiful Things 2015 is coming to Johannesburg. Selected by curator Cathy O’Clery, the criteria for 100 Beautiful Things is that the products be South African-designed and in production in 2015.
The University of Johannesburg Student Design Competition at the BOS Cafe
BOS iced tea, one of South Africa’s most popular designer beverage brands, will be celebrating the creativity of youth with a hip, vibrant and interactive bar where they’ll be serving BOS cocktails and light café-style food.
Design students are being invited to take part in a competition to create red seating for the Bos Bar with ten of the student seats going into production for the event. Visitors will be the judges of the best chair.
And for those who fancy a bit of design for themselves, move over to the BOS tuk-tuk and take part in the BOS Design-a-Can competition.
The team at 100% Design South Africa is always on the look out for new design stars. This pavilion will be a platform for six up-and-coming South African talents, chosen by 100% Design South Africa, to showcase their latest work.
The team behind 100% Design South Africa believes strongly that good design uplifts all and can improve lives. As an ongoing programme, 100% Design South Africa sponsors a creative project that gives back to a community through design. Set on a Long Table, the ceramicists from Art in The Forest will be joined by other creative ventures to showcase a beautiful selection of SA design. The profits of the ceramics on sale will help fund the Light From Africa Foundation’s Healing Through Clay workshops for underprivileged children.
Look out for these and many more exciting feature and collaborations at 100% Design South Africa.
