Bret “The Hitman” Hart to attend Comic Con Africa’s Online Con

Date 2020: Since Comic Con Africa announced that the Con MUST Go ONline, fans have been excited to hear more news of which talent will be appearing. After the announcement of Kevin Eastman, creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jimmy C Mulligan, renowned Disney Artist, conceptual mixed media artist Tony Moy, and comic creator Nooligan, today Comic Con Africa announced some epic news:

Bret “The Hitman” Hart of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) fame, is attending the Online Con!

Well-known to WWE fans, this legend of wrestling has stacked up a pile of Championship belts. Among other accolades he was World Champion seven times, United States Champion five times, King of the Ring, Royal Rumble Winner, and has rounded it all off with immortalisation in the WWE Hall of Fame.

The Hitman is well known for one big claim: “I am the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!”. But who would dare argue considering he has taken on pro wrestlers from Randy Savage to Stone Cold Steve Austin to the Undertaker and defeated them all.

Bret’s career ended abruptly in 1997 after sustaining a stroke-causing blow from fellow WWE wrestler Goldberg, but as a man who in many ways shaped professional wrestling, he didn’t stop and continues to draw massive crowds at every public appearance he makes. He is now an actor, author and a riveting inspirational speaker. A true humanitarian and role model, he lends himself to charity events and was voted one of the Top 50 Canadians of all time.

At the Online Con, Bret will attend a live panel and a Q&A with fans so prepare yourself with any burning questions you have for this larger-than-life figure. There will also be pre-recorded content from The Hitman. He will appear on all four days with exclusive content just for Comic Con Africa fans.

After fans thronged to last year’s WWE stand and took loads of photos of themselves in the mock-up ring with a championship belt over their shoulders, it is clear that Comic Con fans have a massive appetite for pro wrestlers and WWE. Comic Con Africa has answered this hunger with none other than the best, Bret “The Hitman” Hart.

Join Comic Con Africa’s Online Con and Bret Hart from 24 – 27 September 2020, 10h00 – 18h00. We’ll be bringing you the same incredible content we have always been known for – and this time there are no borders and fans from across the globe, can join in on this one-of-a-kind Con broadcast from the tip of Africa. We’ve already packed our social feeds with interactive quiz nights, streams, and interviews – and there is so much more to come!

The 2020 Edition of Comic Con Africa is Cancelled – But the Con MUST Go On!

Following the recent announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that the indefinite ban on large gatherings is still prohibited, the 2020 edition of Comic Con Africa will not happen.

As people, we have heavy hearts – but as organisers, we know that this is the only responsible way to ensure the safety of Comic Con fans, exhibitors, suppliers, and staff.

“During a pandemic which is expected to peak in September, we simply cannot go ahead with hosting the many tens of thousands of fans who attend Comic Con Africa annually” said Carol Weaving, Managing Director of organisers Reed Exhibitions Africa. “Despite months of planning, diligent consideration of the state of the pandemic dictates that cancelling the 2020 edition of Comic Con Africa is the only way forward”.

However, this doesn’t mean that fans of Comic Con Africa will not be able to meet up and immerse themselves in all things pop culture. Comic Con Africa’s passionate organising team are going virtual. This means that Comic Con Africa will be bringing fans and communities an abundance of online content to enjoy, connect with, learn from, share, and be entertained by. Keep an eye on our social media channels as we are already sharing engaging and unique content created for each community and fandom.

But there’s something else even more exciting.

On the originally planned dates of 24 – 27 September 2020 the Con MUST Go ON…line! Comic Con Africa aims to break the internet, bringing a virtual Con to fans in their own homes. Comic Con will be sharing a wealth of exclusive interactive content over the weekend including many of fans’ favourite elements of a real-life Con.

Live chats, Q&As, panel discussions, and the opportunity to virtually meet celebs, fan meet ups, live draws, talks, gaming tournaments and streams, artist panels, Q&As, special exclusive exhibitor deals and more. Everything the Con would usually offer will still take place in exciting and unexpected ways.

“We work hard all year to bring our fans the best in pop culture entertainment and content. By taking the Con Online we know that we will never be able to offer quite the same experience as connecting and engaging at the actual show, but we also don’t want to stop bringing our fans the fun and entertainment in 2020. COVID-19 won’t stop the dedicated fandoms and communities that Comic Con Africa engages with, so by offering an Online Con experience we can still not only keep our communities together, but connect more fans and grow to ensure that our 2021 show is the biggest yet!” said Carla Massmann, the Portfolio Director for Comic Con.

Comic Con Online will be new, it will be exciting, it will be innovative, and it will still be the ultimate pop culture (virtual) festival in Africa.

For anyone who has already bought tickets for Comic Con Africa 2020, we have prepared a plan to roll over the existing tickets to 2021 with a price freeze, or to refund any ticket holders who request it. All ticket holders will receive a direct communication from our ticketing partner Howler over the next few days outlining how that will happen. As of this announcement, 2020 ticket sales have closed.

Comic Con Africa will see you again in 2021. Our virtual offering has no borders and will expose pop culture to an even wider audience. Communities and fandoms will grow and fans will meet each other across the country and into Africa – which means that next year’s Comic Con Africa will be bigger than ever before.

The team cannot wait to bring fans the best in film, series, Cosplay, gaming, role play and tabletop gaming, books, artists and creatives. Ready your internet connection, book out 24 – 27 September 2020 in your diaries, and come get your Con Online with us.

We look forward to seeing you in 2021 when we return with our partners, KFC, Telkom, VS Gaming, and Luno to bring you a bigger and better experience than ever before!

Reed Exhibitions Announces Ron Walden as Executive Sponsor for Race

Hugh Jones, CEO of Reed Exhibitions, announces the appointment of Ron Walden, Group Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Activation of Reed Exhibitions USA, as the company’s first Global Executive Sponsor for Race.

Commenting on the appointment, Hugh Jones said, “The unequal treatment of Black people, and especially the recent killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and others have left many people around the world shocked, angry, devastated, and broken-hearted. We have witnessed the collective anger reach a boiling point in many cities and communities around the world where Reed Exhibitions employees and customers live and work.

Black Lives Matter. We stand in solidarity with our Black and ethnic minority employees, customers, and partners, and we are committed to helping build a company and a world where everyone can live equitably, with dignity and free from fear.

On behalf of Reed Exhibitions, I have signed the Business In The Community’s Race at Work Charter.

We must take action now, and I am therefore delighted that Ron Walden has agreed to be our Global Executive Sponsor for Race.  Using all his experience and advocacy, Ron will provide us with visible leadership on race and ethnicity across our company.  He will drive actions such as recommending where to target our charitable donations, set targets for ethnic minority representation, how we work with recruitment agencies and how we drive mentoring and sponsorship.  He will work with me to create a team to work and advise on these matters globally.”

Speaking to his appointment, Ron Walden said, “I’m honored and proud to be named as Reed Exhibitions’ Global Executive Sponsor for Race and to work with Hugh and all our leaders across the business.

Diversity and inclusion are key to the recovery of companies in the face of economic recessions in many countries, and so I’m excited to see that Reed Exhibitions is reasserting our commitment to race equality by signing up to Business in the Community’s Race at Work Charter.

My role will be to hold Reed Exhibitions accountable and responsible for all our race and ethnic minority initiatives moving forward and to bridge the investment and commitments we’ll make back to the communities in which we live and we operate.

We will of course focus on talent – the recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring, promoting, and rewarding of a diverse workforce.  But we also want to impact our events and the way we organise and hold them – ensuring that black and minority businesses and voices are heard across all sectors and in all countries.  I’m excited and proud to have this opportunity, and I look forward to working with Hugh and all our colleagues to deliver the impact we have committed to.”

About Ron Walden

Ron is Group Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Activation of Reed Exhibitions, USA.  He is a Sales Executive with broad experience in all aspects of sales, marketing, and strategic planning and is a member of the US’s Executive Management Team. Previously, he spent seven years with NIKE; the last four as a Senior Sales Director for Nike, North America.  A life-long advocate committed to elevating social causes, Ron currently serves on board of directors of 4thMVMT and the advisory boards of Chargefuze, and Ally2action.  He is a former board member of the multi-cultural Food Service and Hospitality Alliance (MFHA), Portland Public Schools Foundation, Nike School Innovation Fund, and the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC).  Ron attended California State University (Los Angeles), where he majored in Business Accounting.  Ron and his family reside in southern California.

Decorex Joburg and 100% Design South Africa 2020 to go Virtual in 2020

In a first for the Decorex Africa Portfolio – the country’s leading interior design, décor and product design events – a virtual expo experience will replace this year’s physical shows of Decorex Joburg and 100% Design South Africa, starting on August 6th. . This interactive and virtual event will provide exhibitors, members of the trade, and the public at large with a unique online opportunity to engage and conduct “business as unusual”.

In light of the ongoing restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the team at Reed Exhibitions Africa have looked to virtual solutions in a bid to continue to support the industry and its exhibitors. The decision not to host the physical events in 2020 was made following multiple discussions with the industry and partners, and upon the advice of local and national health authorities.

“Because this is the new normal,” said Decorex Africa Portfolio Director, Sian Cullingworth, “we have adapted accordingly and explored new ways to enable business to continue during these unusual times. While we are sad that we cannot host Decorex Joburg and 100% Design South Africa in their usual format this year, we were determined to do something to stimulate trade and help reignite the economy. So, the virtual expo was born. We’re here for our exhibitors and customers and we want them to know that we value and support them. All our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by COVID-19!”

In 2021, the Decorex Africa Portfolio looks forward to organizing and managing its four interior design and décor shows (namely, Decorex Durban, Decorex Cape Town, Decorex Joburg and 100% Design South Africa) accompanied by four virtual expos. In addition to the upcoming virtual expo in August this year, the lively social media channels for both Decorex and 100% Design South Africa are currently enriching the industry with live and pre-recorded video content that covers new product launches and interviews with designers and decorators.

Look out for more information about our August Virtual Expo, coming soon.

Recent Innovations in the Events Industry You Should be Following

For many years now, technology has successfully disrupted numerous fields, including the events industry. As per an article by Entrepreneur, technology has effectively improved ticketing, reduced costs, increased revenue and enhanced attendee data collection. However, the benefits of technology don’t stop there. Here are some of the recent innovations in the events industry that you should definitely be following:

Top Trends in the Events Industry

Facial recognition

Facial recognition brings a lot of benefits to the event industry, particularly in attendee management. Aside from speeding up event check-ins, improving security and helping businesses collect valuable data, facial recognition helps in delivering personalized services. Every match can be easily used to automate personalized actions such as name printing and email sending.

Multi-use event apps

Based on a recent survey cited by Event Manager Blog, 52% of prominent developers shared that attendees mostly use event apps for researching sessions of interest, creating schedules, taking down notes and looking up rooms. Meanwhile, 49% use them for engagement purposes. These features are effective in covering all of the important attendee touchpoints such as ease-of-use, personalization and brand authenticity.

Social media sentiment analysis

Nowadays, it’s common for attendees to comment on or talk about an event through their social media platform. Given this reality, it is then essential for event managers to have a social media sentiment analysis that can help monitor branding, keep an eye on competitors and determine points of improvement. This kind of analysis can also aid online marketing efforts which, as emphasized in our previous post ‘Marketing Ideas For Your Exhibition’, expands connections and enables businesses to stand out.

Networking apps

For events like business conferences, Jane Adamson describes how networking can help attendees form new connections in their industry. To help promote this, employing the use of networking apps can help them stay in touch during and after the event. Pathable for instance, offers community forums, customizable agendas, attendee profiles, and private scheduling options. Similarly, Whova also features agendas to help participants navigate through expos, so they can read up on the panels and sessions of their choice.

Virtual content hubs

In the events industry, having a virtual content hub enables you to deliver centralized content to your attendees and boost brand awareness. A Forbes article describes how digital content hubs allow you to publish key announcements, speaker bios, and event lineups to help increase online engagement. Increasing online traffic can boost real-world attendance and keep your audience aware of future and current events. Periodically updating your content hub is the key to maintaining long-term engagement and interest.

Virtual trade fairs

In this day and age, going virtual can be a great solution in the event that social distancing is required. BusinessWorld reports how large-scale public art events such as Art Basel and Art Dubai have launched virtual programs to exhibit their artworks. In particular, Art Basel noted how their Online Viewing Rooms received positive feedback from galleries even though they didn’t recreate the full experience of physical trade shows. However, virtual trade fairs provide greater accessibility and interaction for visitors who are unable to visit trade fairs in person.

IATF2020 Postponed due to COVID-19

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the African Union (AU) and the Government of Rwanda have decided to postpone by one year the second Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2020) initially set to take place from 1 to 7 September 2020 in Kigali, Rwanda.

This decision was endorsed by the IATF2020 Advisory Council during its sixth meeting held virtually on 26 April 2020, after careful assessment of the situation.

Organised by Afreximbank in collaboration with the AU, the second IATF will still be hosted by the Government of Rwanda and is now scheduled to take place from 6 to 12 September 2021 in Kigali. It will now be dubbed IATF2021.

Afreximbank President Prof. Benedict Oramah said that the continuing COVID-19 pandemic situation was not conducive to holding such an important pan African event which was initially scheduled to take place in just 4 months.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Governments, corporations and individuals to take unprecedented measures to ensure public safety,” he said. “It is our responsibility to comply with these measures to protect our host country and ensure the health and safety of all delegates, exhibitors and participants who have confirmed or expressed interest in taking part in the second edition of IATF.”

Stressing the need to enable participants to fully benefit from the opportunities offered by the trade fair, Amb. Albert Muchanga, Commissioner for Trade and Industry of the African Union said that the postponement would allow stakeholders to focus on the urgent collective task of responding to the pandemic.

“We are facing an unprecedented health crisis. This is the time to join efforts to also mitigate the impact of the pandemic on African economies. We have agreed that the second IATF needed to take place in a more favourable context to enable African countries and companies to take full advantage of the Trade Fair, which will now become an element of their recovery strategy” said Amb. Muchanga.

Soraya Hakuziyaremye, Minister of Trade and Industry of Rwanda reiterated the commitment of the government of Rwanda to the success of the trade fair.

“The reality we are confronted with today as we fight the spread of Covid-19 has prompted us to look at various factors which will undoubtedly impact African businesses and investors this year. In partnership with Afreximbank and the AU Commission, Rwanda is looking forward to the second IATF in 2021 to boost intra African trade, which is more than ever crucial to the development of our continent,” Hon. Hakuziyaremye said.

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, IATF Advisory Council Chairman and former President of Nigeria said: “We offer sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all those who have lost their lives because of the coronavirus. We also wish all those who have been affected by the virus speedy recovery. We hope that this pandemic will soon be overcome to enable normal businesses to resume and underpin the forthcoming Trade Fair.”

The Advisory Council also decided to postpone the third edition of IATF from 2022 to 2023 to be in line with the two-year intervals between IATF events.

About the second Intra-African Trade Fair: the second edition of the biennial Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) will provide a platform for entry into a single market of over 1.2 billion people joined together by the African Continental Free Trade Area, serving as a marketplace bringing together continental and global buyers and sellers and showcasing goods and services. It will enable stakeholders to share trade, investment and market information as well as trade finance and trade facilitation solutions designed to support intra-African trade and African economic integration. In addition to establishing a business-to-business and a business-to-government exchange platform for business deals and advisory services, the second IATF will also operate a Virtual Trade Fair on an interactive online platform accessible to all. It will also focus on Africa’s creative economy as well as the automotive industry with dedicated programmes.  A Conference will run alongside the exhibition and will feature high-profile speakers and panellists addressing topical issues relating to trade finance, payments, trade facilitation, trade-enabling infrastructure, harmonisation of trade standards, industrialization, regional value chains and investment. Carol Weaving named as a finalist in the Standard Bank Top Women Awards for second year

A role model for gender empowerment, Carol Weaving – Managing Director of Reed Exhibitions – has been announced as a finalist in the 16th annual Standard Bank Top Women Awards. Weaving’s impact on the tourism industry and continued success has seen her, once again, nominated in the ‘Businesswoman of the Year’ category.

As one of South Africa’s most prestigious gender-empowerment events, the Standard Bank Top Women Awards recognises organisations and individuals whose efforts are uplifting women in business and society. This year’s awards’ ceremony will take place on Thursday, 15 August in Johannesburg. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner attended by business and government leaders, VIPs and members of the media.

With a focus on providing opportunities for women in the workplace, Carol Weaving has shown consistent commitment to driving gender parity throughout her career. She boasts more than 30 years’ experience within the tourism industry, having worked her way to position as Managing Director of Reed Exhibitions, one of the globe’s most successful exhibition companies.

Carol started as a Marketing Manager at Radio Station in her home country of the United Kingdom, pursuing her dream of living in South Africa where – at 29 years of age – she was quickly made the youngest director of the Automobile Association at the Kyalami Racetrack. She went on to start her own company – International Exhibition Consultants – and through partnerships, acquisitions, mergers and launches, Carol has found herself in her current position at Reed Exhibitions.

A dynamic and passionate individual always keen for innovation, Carol is renowned for her ‘carpe diem’ attitude and superior management skills. This has seen Reed Exhibitions develop into one of the largest and most successful exhibition and venue management companies in Southern Africa. It is now in a position to grow its footprint across the African continent with many new ventures in the pipeline.

Reed Exhibitions currently owns a number of major titles including World Travel Market Africa, ILTM Africa, Sports & Events Tourism Exchange, IBTM Africa, Africa Automation Fair, Connected Industries, Decorex Joburg,  Decorex Cape Town, Decorex Durban, 100% Design, International Sourcing Fair, Fire & Feast Meat and Food Festival, Mediatech Africa, Comic Con Africa, Comic Con Cape Town, KidsCon, Business of Gaming Forum, FIBO Global Fitness Africa and Intra-African Trade Fair. Reed Exhibitions also offers strategic venue management solutions and are contracted to manage the award-winning Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, on behalf of its owners – the Sasol Pension Fund – until 2024.

No stranger to awards, Carol received the 2018 ‘CEO Today Magazine Africa’ award, the 2017 ‘Woman in MICE Newsmaker of the Year’ award, and the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ award at the 2012 Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards, among others. At previous Standard Bank Top Women Awards, Carol took home the 2014 ‘Top Female Entrepreneur of the Year’ award and was also a finalist in the ‘Businesswoman of the Year’ category last year.

Finalists and winners at the Standard Bank Top Women Awards have been a source of inspiration to women and men in business, encouraging their industry peers to break new boundaries and innovate wherever possible. With her excellent performance in the tourism industry, Carol Weaving hopes to do the same.

“I feel so privileged to, once again, be a finalist in such a groundbreaking event that both acknowledges the impact South African women are having across industries, as well as providing inspiration to the upcoming female influencers,” said Carol. “Considering the caliber of past winners in this particular category, as well as incredible women involved this year, I am completely overwhelmed by my inclusion and grateful for the honor.”
