Carol Weaving

Managing Director of Thebe Reed Exhibitions

Carol Weaving grew up and was educated in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. It was also in England that she studied marketing and communications, and started her career in radio. She emigrated to South Africa in 1987.

Carol has worked in South Africa’s business tourism industry for the past 25 years – from arranging exhibitions, events and conferences, to managing venues and facilities.

She was a director of the AA at Kyalami racetrack and then opened her own company. She later sold a majority share in this company to Dutch exhibition company RAI, and then headed up RAI South Africa.

Understanding the need for an empowerment partner, she proceeded to facilitate a buy-out of RAI shares to the Thebe Tourism Group, a subsidiary of the Thebe Investment Corporation. Until recently she headed up the Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group as a 30% shareholder.

In November 2013 Reed Exhibitions, part of the FTSE listed RELX Group, signed a joint venture agreement with the Thebe Tourism Group Pty Limited to acquire a majority share in Thebe Exhibitions & Projects Group (TEPG).

TEPG has been renamed Thebe Reed Exhibitions Pty Limited and is owned 60% by Reed Exhibitions, 30% by Thebe Tourism Group, with Carol Weaving retaining 10% as managing director. It is one of the largest and most successful business events companies in South Africa and it is now in a position to grow its footprint across the African continent.

Carol is past Chairman of the Exhibition Association of Southern Africa (EXSA), and has also served on the board of the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI).

Thebe Reed Exhibitions landed an exclusive branding rights deal for the dome with Ticketpro, South Africa. Part of the branding rights deal was the renaming of the venue to Ticketpro Dome.

Sasol Pension Fund, owners of Ticketpro dome, renewed the management contract for the venue with Thebe Venue Management, a division of Thebe Exhibitions & Projects Group, until 2024.

Today Thebe Reed Exhibitions is one of the largest companies of its kind in Africa, with significant market share. The group owns major exhibition titles such as Decorex, Mediatech Africa, The Business Opportunities and Franchise Expo, 100% Design, the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange and now Africa Travel Week comprising World Travel Market Africa, ILTM and IBTM in partnership with freed Travel Exhibitions.

Anyone who has ever worked with Carol will agree – the energy, passion and enthusiasm she exudes makes it impossible to be a passive bystander with any project she tackles – and completes.

A self-confessed adrenaline junkie with seemingly boundless levels, those closest to her can bear testimony to her commitment to living out her daily mantra, carpe diem (“seize the day”), to the full.
