The Decorex Design Department would not be the same without Heather Reid. She certainly ensures that there is never a dull moment in the office (or onsite) and is always our go-to-girl for anything from design elements for the shows or just needed an extra pair of hands-on-deck when things get manic. With her bubbly personality and infectious laugh, we can see why she is loved by all – and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Recently she was promoted to Creative Project Manager for the Lifestyle, Design & Retail Portfolio at Reed Exhibitions South Africa.
- Tell us a little more about you
I studied to be a graphic designer and have worked in the design industry for the last 5 years. I joined Decorex Africa 3 years ago where I took on the role of graphic designer and creative co-ordinator. With a love for design and a passion for all things creative, this position was the perfect combination of both graphic design as well as the chance to get into the interior décor space as I began to conceptualise mood boards, choose colours and themes for various features and restaurants at the show and I got to learn all about the exhibition industry and what it takes to put an event together. I have grown into a new position now as Creative Project Manager where I get to work closely with our Creative Director on the overall look and feel of the exhibition and manage the co-ordination of the creative side of the event, everything from design look and feels for digital and print campaigns to dealing with suppliers and managing projects on site. The sky is the limit and I look forward to what the future holds in this exciting creative space!
- How long have you been in the industry?
I have been in the exhibition industry for 3 very exciting years, and have learnt so much. I love how I get to use this platform as a creative outlet and to see a concept come to life – it’s just the best!
- What three words would you use to describe your role?
Creative | Conceptual | Inspiring
- What are you most excited about for Decorex 2020 and why?
I am most excited to watch all the latest design trends come to life within the show, and how these trends can be integrated into our day to day lives. It is an incredible experience seeing firsthand how top South African Designers create spaces that are of world-class going from international trends to local gems.
- What’s your favourite décor blog?
- What is your must-have Décor item, and why?
My must-have décor item has to be wall art – anything from large framed prints to small artisanal pieces to the very unconventional, cute, quirky ceramic pieces. I find that these pieces really do express who you are and makes your home, a home. This personal touch really creates a unique feature which brings new energy and transformation to any room.
- What’s the 2020 trend that you are most excited for?
Carpets – with the original colour & material combinations seen at the latest Milan Design Week I am at the edge of my seat waiting for this burst of fun to enter our homes in 2020… bring on the geometric shapes and patterns adding that touch of excitement every step we take through the year ahead.
- What’s your personal motto or mantra that you live by?
“Being a person is getting too complicated. Time to be a unicorn”. – I am a big lover of anything ‘unicorn’ as it really does add a little magic and fun to life! #whodoesntloveunicorns 😊
